Our Frugal Lifestyle

My photo
Passionate about eco-frugality. I used to party hard, clubbing my way from pay-packet to pay-packet. Never getting ahead, just getting by. Then came our much wanted baby with no savings in the bank - only an old car. Changes were made to our lifestyle and we didn't turn back. In the past 6yrs we purchased a flat, found employment, lived below our means, built an emergency fund, purchased a reliable car and saw the financial benefits of our frugal lifestyle. Our only debt is our mortgage. Our aim is to manage our cash flow wisely, pay off our home quickly and eventually work for pleasure, not necessity. Join us on our journey, share insights, tips and tricks to help us and others to get ahead while having a good time.

Freecycle Lime Delight!

I wanted to show you all, my exciting Freecycle loot from a few weeks ago. A generous woman has 5 trees loaded with limes in her backyard and picked a huge basket full to give away to fellow Freecyclers.

I was able to come home with over 100 limes that I picked from her basket. I was so excited as I eat half a lemon a day in my daily juice and vegetable smoothies. The lemons I sometimes purchase at the supermarket are big, glossy and waxed. These small local limes are in their beautiful natural state so I can also eat the skins without the concern of turning into a candle.

Not only were they FREE but they don't come to my table with thousands of travel miles behind them. As you all know that makes me feel much happier. It's hard analysing and worrying about what we eat and where it comes from all the time so when I find a treat like this my mind can relax a bit.

Does your brain think non stop about money, ecology and doing the right thing? Mine is very busy... greatly overwhelmed.

I look forward to hearing what your mind thinks about non stop or any FREE food you were able to find.

  2. Wow those limes are a great score.

I have been given a heap of lemons, mandarins, apples and some quinces in the last month so I have been very lucky too!

I am constantly thinking about saving money and eating more organically. I would love to be able to source more organic food, but we are very limited here. There is one farmers market in a nearby town but that is only on once a month and I dont always get there as it is an hours drive away...Saving money, well that is an ongoing thing where I am hoping and trying like mad to reduce the mortgage. This is our only debt so we are able to add extra payments quite often. I love seeing the amount owed get lower and lower :)

  3. I am also delighted you are back Stephanie! Have been thinking of you recently.

Your interview came across brilliantly, and I think you will have inspired lots of people with what you say. Having taught the children in my class about charity recently, I was pleasantly surprised by the number who had bought items from Charity (Op) shops. Times are changing for the better here too.

What a great result from Freecycle. We must get back into that. We do exchange surplus with neighbours however which feels great.

Looking forward to MORE GREAT POSTS.

  4. Great freecycling, enjoy your bounty!
I have been LETS trading today and picked up lots of useful stuff free. It also makes use of stuff people no longer want or need :)
