Our Frugal Lifestyle

My photo
Passionate about eco-frugality. I used to party hard, clubbing my way from pay-packet to pay-packet. Never getting ahead, just getting by. Then came our much wanted baby with no savings in the bank - only an old car. Changes were made to our lifestyle and we didn't turn back. In the past 6yrs we purchased a flat, found employment, lived below our means, built an emergency fund, purchased a reliable car and saw the financial benefits of our frugal lifestyle. Our only debt is our mortgage. Our aim is to manage our cash flow wisely, pay off our home quickly and eventually work for pleasure, not necessity. Join us on our journey, share insights, tips and tricks to help us and others to get ahead while having a good time.

Breaking My Rules

Sometimes I am just too tired. After a busy day at work I collected my daughter from school and we walked the hot walk home. We stopped and fed chickens lunch box scraps half way home and then pushed ourselves the rest of the way to our messy sanctuary.

Tonight I just couldn't face cooking as I spent extra time with my overtired, emotional and sick daughter. Instead we read, while cuddling our cat in bed and asked our family man to purchase Hungry Jacks on his way home from his long work day. Fast food which exploits people, animals and the environment. I like to be good - but I fall prey to the fast and popular - and am always disappointed in the bland taste that leaves me dissatisfied and hungry for more.

So I sit here feeling guilty once again for breaking my own rules. What a waste...

How about you? Do you fall for things that you try to ban from your life?

  1. I hear you and with no judgement suggest some batch cooking. Make up some stews, or chilli or lasagne and freeze it. we all have days when we can't be bothered and need something easy

  2. we haven't eaten pizza hut in 5 yrs, hungry jacks is the same..we have eaten macdonalds once in the last 5 yrs(and that was disappointing) thankfully my children don't really like that kinda thing...BUT everything now and then we get KFC,its not often so we don't feel one bit quilty at all....we only every make our own fish n chips too cause its just so costly for our family.

  3. I can feel myself getting weaker in the days before my husband gets home (and I find this is when I'm more likely to do something similar). We all have weak points, and reading, cuddling cakes and family time sound like a great way to spend the time saved from cooking.

  4. We mostly eat healthy made at home food, but in all honesty, sometimes a Chinese takeaway or a whopper with cheese is food for the soul.

  5. I love indian curry take away. I am weaning myself off it. I cant make it the same and there is no jar of sauce that touches the taste of our local indian restaurant.

My real vices are fizzy drinks and swearing. Oh and magazines. yeah, those 3 if I could kick them I would be super happy. The curry stays though. Lifes too short not to have good curry.

  6. You're right Guilt is a wasted emotion. Don't look back and feel guilty about buying and eating fast food. You did what you thought was right at the time :-)

  7. Greetings!
I fail at something every, single day. Humans are like that. Cut yourself some slack and get back on the horse. Tomorrow's a new day!

  8. Oh yuck - that guilty after taste - flip it upside down honey and take the opportunity to look for the positive - the wonderful memory you created that afternoon spending precious child time with your daughter will far outweigh the bad taste of any food - she will remember you and your gift of time and takeaway being brought home as a treat - she can't say she NEVER has hungry jacks (like we NEVER have KFC even though the complainer is the one most passionate about the reasons we don't!), the experience serves as a reminder that you aren't actually missing out on anything afterall.
As a child we didn't have the fast food and sweets and chips for lunch that everyone else in the whole school had - so guess what we did as much as we could as soon as we were able to, oh the overindulgence and it's long lasting effects :)
