Our Frugal Lifestyle

My photo
Passionate about eco-frugality. I used to party hard, clubbing my way from pay-packet to pay-packet. Never getting ahead, just getting by. Then came our much wanted baby with no savings in the bank - only an old car. Changes were made to our lifestyle and we didn't turn back. In the past 6yrs we purchased a flat, found employment, lived below our means, built an emergency fund, purchased a reliable car and saw the financial benefits of our frugal lifestyle. Our only debt is our mortgage. Our aim is to manage our cash flow wisely, pay off our home quickly and eventually work for pleasure, not necessity. Join us on our journey, share insights, tips and tricks to help us and others to get ahead while having a good time.

Slow Cooker Left Overs

I'm back into some slow cooking for time saving and frugality due to cheaper cuts of meat working well slow cooked.

I prepare and place everything into the slow cooker by 7am. Dress for my busy working day and Dolly for her school day. Turn it on Low as we leave the house and dinner is ready when we return 9.5 hours latter. We plate up and eat. Easy and Fuss Free for a Busy Household.

I slow cooked a roast, a couple of small steaks and vegetables in one pot. After we ate dinner, I filled containers with left overs for 4 quick meals this week.
  • Fall apart steak to serve with rice.
  • Left over roast and veggies to eat with salad night 1 and pasta on night 2.
  • Roast and veggies for Rambling Expats lunch.

Home Made - Take Away

I'm keeping within the budget of $100 a week shopping for groceries. My aim is to cut back to $80 the next 4 weeks and use up everything in the fridge and freezer to start the new year afresh with a nice cleared and clean fridge.

I'm tightening the belt again money wise and need to stop buying any frivolous junk food. If/When I go part time my wages will be slashed by 30%. That is huge and scary. How's your budget coming along? Does it need tweaking and reworking like mine does?

  2. There's nothing to beat a slow cooked meal with the meat falling apart and so tender. We've had a roast today but that was cooked in the main oven. We've got left overs for 2 other meals aswell.

  5. I cooked a sweet and sour beef and a satay chicken in the slow cooker this weekend. Its a good way to cook in the heat too. Goodluck with your budget!

  6. ive been cosidering finding friends to bulk cook with. You cover the costs to make one meal each and then split it between a few families. Then the other families do the same etc etc. and you end up with bulk frozen meals at a cheaper price. There is the mamabake movement on facebook which runs a similar way but I havent looked into if they have any local groups or not. (should get onto that actually) our food costs are what cripple us each fortnight (fortnightly pay) and any hint or tips you have to limit that are welcomed! maybe an "idiots guide to frugal" e-book might be a winning idea. Payment by Paypal or barter. Lol
