Our Frugal Lifestyle

My photo
Passionate about eco-frugality. I used to party hard, clubbing my way from pay-packet to pay-packet. Never getting ahead, just getting by. Then came our much wanted baby with no savings in the bank - only an old car. Changes were made to our lifestyle and we didn't turn back. In the past 6yrs we purchased a flat, found employment, lived below our means, built an emergency fund, purchased a reliable car and saw the financial benefits of our frugal lifestyle. Our only debt is our mortgage. Our aim is to manage our cash flow wisely, pay off our home quickly and eventually work for pleasure, not necessity. Join us on our journey, share insights, tips and tricks to help us and others to get ahead while having a good time.

Boxing Day

Hello Frugalites,

As others in Australia were busy shopping till they dropped at the Post Christmas Boxing Day Sales, I was busy decluttering.

I prepared 2 bags of books to take in to a local book shop for hard cash or credit.
3 bags of clothes and other odds and ends went to the op shop.
I sorted out bottles and cans that had built up from neighbours and took them to the cash for cans depot the next day ($33 worth)
And I weeded for 2 hours in my garden plot in the suffocating monsoonal heat.

My aims were:
  • No spending,
  • Decluttering,
  • Get some extra money in,
  • Save money by growing/making my own.

With my partners work situation being so insecure I am trying harder then usual to get more of the mortgage paid off. We were meant to go to Borneo this holiday season but decided to stay put and holiday in our own home so that if any decisions are made we would hear it and action quickly if required. And of course staying home means no extra expense of flights and accommodation. We will put the dollars we saved for the trip into our mortgage.

What have you been doing? Spending Money, Earning Extra or Saving More?

In Frugal Solidarity,

Stephanie at Frugal Down Under

  1. We've had floods and howling gales here and it's warm for this time of year, 10 - 14 degrees so it's damp and clammy here with no let up. I'm desperate for the light to return as it's cloudy and raining most days. I have been sewing and quilting to keep me busy with the radio on or reading by the fire. Roll on spring xxxx sorry it's so hot there but the global weather is crazy!

  3. Sounds good to me! I've been avoiding the shops like a plague, although I did go spend my Christmas voucher on a mini-greenhouse and a big planting container! Got to get started on my "allotment", aka a bunch of containers on the decking of our flat!

The Boyfriend and I have been talking about cuttingback expenses even further, so I've hardly spent a thing this month!

  5. Thanks for popping in Froogs, I know you have a high readership and must get so busy keeping up with your own blog. It's always an honour to have Blogging Royalty pop in :) My mum returned from Brittany last month and she complained of the cold wet weather. I don't enjoy the cold but I whinge about the heat... LOL - never satisfied. I would like to head to France one spring and allow my daughter to experience picking flowers in the country side like I did. We don't have spring in the tropics - spring always sounds so romantic.

Peter, Decluttering is a wonderful purging activity. I have been reading a little Colin Wright - he inspires me. And watching him on You Tube he is eloquent with his words and facial expressions for such a young man.

Bryallen, if there are any people with a bit of garden space you can always try and ask them if you can grow a veggie patch and share the produce. Your shopping is going to save you a lot of money in the long run.

Miss Piggy Bank, wet and miserable here too. Wet from sweat...
