Our Frugal Lifestyle

My photo
Passionate about eco-frugality. I used to party hard, clubbing my way from pay-packet to pay-packet. Never getting ahead, just getting by. Then came our much wanted baby with no savings in the bank - only an old car. Changes were made to our lifestyle and we didn't turn back. In the past 6yrs we purchased a flat, found employment, lived below our means, built an emergency fund, purchased a reliable car and saw the financial benefits of our frugal lifestyle. Our only debt is our mortgage. Our aim is to manage our cash flow wisely, pay off our home quickly and eventually work for pleasure, not necessity. Join us on our journey, share insights, tips and tricks to help us and others to get ahead while having a good time.

Eco Nature Opportunities

Hi Eco-Frugalistas,

Today I want to share an amazing experience my family had a few weeks back. Eighteen months ago I placed my family's name on a Government Department list that look after the Parks and Wildlife of my state for a Turtle Release Program. Just before leaving work for the day on a Friday I received THE CALL to say it was our turn with other families to attend the release and that we should be at the designated beach in 3 hours! I quickly organised my family to leave work on time and cancel all other plans. Our small group was ready and geared up for an exciting afternoon at the beach within the tight timeframe.

Oh what fun and excitement! The Ranger gave an educational talk about Turtles and Sea Turtle Conservation which we found interesting. She answered many questions and then released newly hatched turtles on the beach. Each family group was allocated a turtle to follow on it's voyage from sand to sea. We followed our sweet little turtle protecting it from birds as it made the long journey over hot sand, puddles and into the sea waves. It was a wonderful experience where my family was able to learn on the ground with a heart full of joy - and it was absolutely FREE!

And this is where I want to talk about Eco-Frugality. Place your name on FREE lists for experiences! You may just stumble upon that once in a lifetime opportunity that becomes a special moment in your life. If it's a boring disappointment - politely walk out, but you wont know if you don't try. As I have said many times, people ask me all the time how I know about these FREE activities available in the community. The simple answer is; I read noticeboards, community papers/newsletters, I chat to people and ask questions. It seems the more I do, the more I find out about other great opportunities. In fact there are so many wonderful events in my small city, that at times I become overwhelmed on what to choose.

Does your city run programs that are just too good to pass up?

Looking forward to your comments,

Stephanie @ Frugal Down Under.

  1. Our libraries run lots of free things, some educational, some social all interesting and informative. They put out a quarterly booklet with all activities listed. Most you have to ring and book as places are limited but all are free

  2. Pommepal, Our library has activities too but not a quarterly booklet with all of them. It's more like leaflets for different activities. I would love a well organised booklet where I could see everything on offer.
