Our Frugal Lifestyle

My photo
Passionate about eco-frugality. I used to party hard, clubbing my way from pay-packet to pay-packet. Never getting ahead, just getting by. Then came our much wanted baby with no savings in the bank - only an old car. Changes were made to our lifestyle and we didn't turn back. In the past 6yrs we purchased a flat, found employment, lived below our means, built an emergency fund, purchased a reliable car and saw the financial benefits of our frugal lifestyle. Our only debt is our mortgage. Our aim is to manage our cash flow wisely, pay off our home quickly and eventually work for pleasure, not necessity. Join us on our journey, share insights, tips and tricks to help us and others to get ahead while having a good time.

Decluttering.

After Gardening at the Botanical Gardens, a FREE Craft Activity at Officeworks and a movie at home Dolly played while I got on with some much needed decluttering and sorting.

This is what is Gone:
  • Bag of books to another child.
  • Early 1980s TV - Dump-Landfill (no one on Freecycle was interested)
And Going
  • 2 wigs purchased for a costume party 6 years ago.
  • Our written off car. (Car yards aren't interested. Placed on Freecycle hopefully someone will take it as a project and drive with it soon.)
  • Bag of soft toys. (Please no more!!! Why do girls get given so many of these)

Less clutter at home means less money and time wasted.. I know this.. but I'm hoarder. I think I may just need this another day and also because I don't want to put stuff in the bin due to it's ecological nightmare to landfill. But it's to my detriment.

I am still following my rules of anything in, means same amount or larger must go out. However we are still overwhelmed with stuff. I pushed myself while I had the rare decluttering bug and aim to get more out this month.

Are you good at decluttering or are you like me with the "I may need this for...."? What are you like with clutter?

  1. What a shame about your car, it looks so clean and tidy. Couldnt you put it on ebay and raise cash, someone may want it for spares or repairs.

  2. Ebay is ok for small items to post but not cars in my small remote city. There is a lot of dessert between here and other cities where someone would buy a car like this. The cost of transport would exceed it's value.

  3. Total hoarder but trying to be better. Can't let go of my inner nanna. I am giving items the happiness test - is this making me happy? no, then off it goes. Items I really like can go out under this test as they may seem awesome but are really just in the way.

  4. I understand completely about the soft toys. If I had kept every one that my kids had been given I think they would half fill a room. No matter how many times I tell my ex-in laws not to buy stuffed toys they keep doing it. I really think they are a waste of space. My kids don't even play with them they just sit on the end of the bed.

  5. that is a shame - the car would be snapped up here and broken for parts, gypsies make big money doing this here, they sell on parts, recycle wiring and recycle any metal - have a look at these guys

  6. I hope you find a home for your car, what a shame!

I'm a bad de-clutter'er, and really need to improve in this area.

  7. You've inspired me. I'm off to do some decluttering of your own! You have to be ruthless sometimes. (And in my case, don't show Mum what you're donating.. "Ohh, but so-and-so got you that" or "you used to love that when you were little")

  8. Another member of Hoarders Anonymous here. We have a saying in our house: "But it might come in handy..." It never does, so when I hear these words now I know it's time to let the item in question go.
