Our Frugal Lifestyle

My photo
Passionate about eco-frugality. I used to party hard, clubbing my way from pay-packet to pay-packet. Never getting ahead, just getting by. Then came our much wanted baby with no savings in the bank - only an old car. Changes were made to our lifestyle and we didn't turn back. In the past 6yrs we purchased a flat, found employment, lived below our means, built an emergency fund, purchased a reliable car and saw the financial benefits of our frugal lifestyle. Our only debt is our mortgage. Our aim is to manage our cash flow wisely, pay off our home quickly and eventually work for pleasure, not necessity. Join us on our journey, share insights, tips and tricks to help us and others to get ahead while having a good time.

Cyclone Clutter

Here we are again... Last night we were waiting on a cyclone. The sky was heavy with rain, our laundry piled high, our home damp.

I look at the clutter around me and wish it would diminish faster. Each time a cyclone comes, the clutter blinds me of the items that need special care and attention. I have worked at eliminating clutter with small weekly bags leaving our home. I have also followed our rule of anything new in means the same amount or more out. Happily very little new has come in lately.

Now that I have photoshop up and running again I will declutter more. My aim is to find something in our home to list for selling each day. A book here, a doll there, baby dress, old camera gear, old toys, kitchen stuff and so forth.

The money will go in the appropriate place. If it's a family item in common it will go in our home loan or Borneo fund. If it's Dolly's, she will carefully divide it into three, and place it in her various savings. If it's my mums it will go to her. If it's mine I think I will place it in my online savings account.

Today school was cancelled, the cyclone bypassed us and my laundry keeps piling. So time to focus on some clutter to make room, breathing space and extra cash. And I'm starting with this much enjoyed John Waters DVD of Cry Baby with Johnny Depp. I've watched it many times over the years and it can go now.

How about you? Got some junk to turn to cash laying around?

  1. I just turned some furniture into cash! I could turn lots more into cash if I could get it out. That involved enlisting the help of two guy friends and coordinating them to both be here at the same time. Now, that is a real pain.

    Two questions:

What does a cyclone have to do with your clutter bothering you more?

Why do you need photoshop to list things? Cameras come with a program to do what I need to do to list things.

  2. Hi Practical Parsimony, When a cyclone comes we prepare our home in case everything blows away. We put our most important possessions (computer, documents, camera gear etc) in large plastic boxes in the hallway or bathroom to hopefully prevent them from getting blown, wet or damaged. I lost many uni text books, papers and documents (some I needed last week) when we were flooded 2 years ago and I don't want this to occur again. A big cyclone would shatter our windows and everything would fly. Clutter prevents us from working quickly and effectively in seeing what is important and what isn't. As I am a admin shelter volunteer for the dept I work for, I need to be there before it opens so my time between work and volunteering needs to be be organised and productive when we prepare.
Photoshop is the program I am comfortable with and know how to manipulate the sizes for boards where I am listing. By using photoshop my photos are ready in just a couple of minutes. My partner is a professional photographer and we always have photoshop on our MAC (except for the past week) and no other photo programs. We try to not overload our computer with too many programs so only keep the most needed.

  3. Thanks for the explanation. When a tornado might be heading our way, I, too, similarly get things together. However, if it all blows away, plastic boxes won't be of any use. So, I just hope that I only need protection from water damage. I have too many books to even try and protect them with each tornado. They come often around her. I live in Dixie Alley, and we have more F5 tornadoes than any place on earth, two tornado seasons, and the state is the heaviest hit, just counting the number of tornadoes!

I cannot figure out how to size pictures. That holds me back when I need to post for Etsy, Craig's List, etc. I can guess as I size, then check. But,that is tedious. However, I cannot afford Photoshop.

  4. Hi Frugal Down Under
Ive found you via Sherrie's Simple living blog.

Your preparing for a cyclone reminded me of a conversation I had with a friend last year. We were comparing the 'junk rooms' we both had and how neither wants to deal with it. To cut a long story short - about a week later my friend's house burnt to the ground, she got out with the kids and clothes on their back. We now laugh at her extreme method of finally dealing with that 'junk room'.
Look forward to hearing more about your endeavours.
